Environmental Compliance Approval and Regulatory Compliance

Municipal properties discharging contaminants into the natural environment are required under Part II of the Environmental Protection Act to apply to the Ministry of Environment for an Environmental Compliance Approval to demonstrate compliance with regulatory limits. Ministry approval is required for a facility which:

  • emits to the atmosphere,
  • produces noise,
  • discharges to surface waters,
  • draws in excess of 50,000 litres per day from a non-Municipal water source,
  • discharges in excess of 10,000 litres per day to a non-Municipal septic system, and
  • requires on-site remedial activities for soil/ground water contamination.

For municipalities this includes landfill sites and waste water treatment facilities.
